Glad to hear it worked. I had forgotten about the buttons to set up the synch.

No, I don't even own a console, just the Wiimote. I'll send you another comment tomorrow when I am in the office and can boot mine up and see exactly what I need to do to get it connected - my memory is a little foggy.
Placement does matter - you have to get the Wiimote to be able to see the whole screen (trial and error, but try about 20 feet back and not quite head-on. You may also have to tweak the up-down pointing.
The Wiimote software at http://www.uweschmidt.org/wiimote-whiteboard might help. Also, turn your Wiimote on before starting up the software - mine works fine when I do that, but when I tried to manually synch from the original Johnny Lee software, it asked for a code for the Wiimote, which I did not have. When I started the software with the Wiimote already on, it worked fine without the synch.
It was easy to set up the Wiimote, and pretty easy to build an IR pen, but then I got busy with other projects so I haven't had a chance to play with how to use it. I need to find a good open-source whiteboard/note-taking software package for the Mac.
